Prosodic Features from Large Corpora of Child-Directed Speech as Predictors of the Age of Acquisition of Words

چکیده
The impressive ability of children to acquire language is a widely studied phenomenon, and the factors influencing the pace and patterns of word learning remains a subject of active research. Although many models predicting the age of acquisition of words have been proposed, little emphasis has been directed to the raw input children achieve. In this work we present a comparatively large-scale multimodal corpus of prosody-text aligned child directed speech. Our corpus contains automatically extracted word-level prosodic features, and we investigate the utility of this information as predictors of age of acquisition. We show that prosody features boost predictive power in a regularized regression, and demonstrate their utility in the context of a multimodal factorized language models trained and tested on child-directed speech.

Conceptual and prosodic cues in child-directed speech can help children learn the meaning of disjunction
At first glance, children’s word learning appears to be mostly a problem of learning words like dog and run. However, it is small words like and and or that enable the construction of complex combinatorial language. How do children learn the meaning of these function words? Using transcripts of parentchild interactions, we investigate the cues in child-directed speech that can inform the interp...
متن کاملCrosslinguistic perspectives on the development of prosodic words.
Researchers have long known that children’s early word productions differ from those of adults, both in the segments and syllables produced (e.g., dog > [dɑ]; banana > [ n nə). Some have proposed that these early segmental /syllabic truncations are due to early perceptual or articulatory limitations (e.g., Echols, 1992; MacNeilage, 1980). Others have proposed that children’s early words are ph...

Language users benefit from special phonetic tools in order to communicate linguistic information as well as different emotional aspects and paralinguistic information through daily conversation. Having functions in conveying semantic information to listeners, prosodic features form the essential part of linguistic behavour, manipulating them potentially can play an important role in transmitt...
متن کاملThe effect of bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the acoustic and prosodic features in patients with Parkinson’s disease: A study protocol for the first trial on Iranian patients
Background: The effect of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) on the voice features in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is controversial. No study has evaluated the voice features of PD underwent STN-DBS by the acoustic, perceptual, and patient-based assessments comprehensively. Furthermore, there is no study to investigate prosodic features before and after DBS in PD. The curren...
متن کاملGrammar and frequency effects in the acquisition of prosodic words in European Portuguese.
This paper investigates the acquisition of prosodic words in European Portuguese (EP) through analysis of grammatical and statistical properties of the target language and child speech. The analysis of grammatical properties shows that there are solid cues to the prosodic word (PW) in EP, and the presence of early word-based phonology in child speech shows that EP children are aware of these cu...
